Written by Briley Ewing, granddaughter of Lora Wimsatt
My name is Briley and I am 9 years old. I like to do fun things with my Granma. Here are some ideas for grandparents about how to have fun with your grandkids.
Kids like to go on adventures to places. One of my favorite things is to go to the horse race. I like that because we get to see a bunch of horses and I like horses.
Another adventure is that we went on a train ride. I liked that we went on the train because I got to eat cookies and I got to see Santa and I got to sit in this really huge chair.
One time we bought cookies and delivered them to the police station. We bought chocolate chip cookies because we thought a bunch of people like them.
We went on a nature hike and we saw birds and butterflies. We saw bees and I thought they were going to sting me. Granma said they weren’t but we left and went home anyway.
Every year, Granma goes on a walk on the Big Blue Bridge with me. I like that because I get to walk with her and I get talk to her.
Granma likes educational things. She likes to ask questions to make me think. We went to see the eclipse. I learned not to look up without the glasses.
Another thing I like to do with my Granma is play board games and cards. We play checkers, Old Maid and Bingo. I like checkers because I am good at it. Granma does not let me win but I win anyway. Old Maid is fun because a bunch of people can play it with us. I like to play Bingo because it is exciting see who will win.
When I was little, Granma told me that when you win, you have to be nice, and when you lose, you have to be nice still. This is so you don’t make the other person sad. If you make them sad, they won’t want to play with you anymore.
Sometimes we make up games. My favorite is called “Three Clues.” First you think of somebody and then you give three hints about that person, and the other person gets three tries to guess who it is before you tell them who it is. For example, one time I thought of my Mom and I said, “She has curly hair, and she has one little boy, and she likes tacos.” And Granma said, “Is it your Aunt Cori?” And I said, “No.” And then she said, “Is it your Mom?” And I said “Yes!”
I like to go to school things with my Granma. One time she went to my school and I showed her my frog book that I made. She comes to my school on Grandparents Day. We eat lunch and go to the Book Fair. She buys me the book that I pick out. Granma likes it whenever I read.
Granma teaches me lots of things. She taught me how to read and how to write in cursive. She taught me some songs, like “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” and “Old McDonald Had a Farm” when I was little. She taught me the sounds that animals make.
One of my favorite things is to look through her photo albums. I like to see pictures of a long time ago of my Mom and Dad. I like to see Granma as a little kid. I like to see pictures of myself and I like to see funny pictures of Granma’s dog.
Granma has fun things to play with at her house. I like to play with her dog Rufus. If you throw a toy, he runs and goes to get it. He brings it back and you can throw it again and he will do the same thing again.
Some of the toys she has are Gumby and Pokey and a sock monkey named Mary Monkey and a stuffed dog named Rover. They are fun to play with.
Granma does not have the same toys that I have at home. Her toys are more older. Granma says she does not like toys that are plugged in.
I like being with my Granma because she’s nice and sweet. It is fun whenever I go with her. We go to cool places that I have never been at.
My advice for other grandmothers is to watch your grandkids whenever you can and have fun with them. Be nice to your grandkids so they will want to play with you.
