When you think of Owensboro, fashion may not be the first thing on your mind. We’re surrounded by bigger cities full of malls, superstores, and trendy thrift shops. Not to mention online shopping is taking the world by storm. Years ago, taking regular shopping trips to Evansville was the only way to go if you wanted to get something special. I’m happy to report that this is no longer the case.
My name is Julia Hartz, and I’m an Owensboro native and fashion blogger. You’ll find me taking pictures around town in brightly colored outfits, with my blonde miniature dachshund in hand. There’s a safe bet that I’m either holding balloons or champagne, wearing high heels and spinning around like a crazy person, but don’t let that scare you into not taking me seriously. I’ve been blogging for almost four years now, and I have to say it’s brought me more joy than anything I’ve ever done. People get the idea in their heads that fashion and clothing are frivolous vanities that aren’t important, don’t help anybody, and are more or less unnecessary. What most people don’t realize is that what you wear is the first impression someone has of you. It’s the first thing you say to someone without even opening your mouth. Fashion is art, even if it’s simple. What you wear says something about who you are and what you want out of life, and I think that’s a pretty big deal.
People still talk about Jackie Kennedy’s pink suit, about Kate Middleton’s latest and greatest outfit. Do you think people don’t notice what you wear? You don’t have to marry a president or a prince for your style to be iconic. The great thing about this growing city is that there are far more shopping options than there have ever been. Our boutiques are now the stars of the show. Owensboro has become a shopping destination, instead of an afterthought.
With the constant presence of social networks such as Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook and Pinterest, shopping is easier than ever. Supporting local boutiques is a breeze, because most of them consistently post new arrivals and store updates, and will ship pretty much anywhere. A common misconception about boutiques is that they carry overpriced, expensive merchandise that costs too much for you to wear to Friday After 5, in the event that you spill your cocktail on your new one of a kind dress. Yes, boutique clothing can be pricey. But I’m here to show you that usually quality overcomes quantity, and that mixing pieces of different price ranges is completely doable, and dare I say, fun!
I’m excited to be beginning this journey with summer fashion, because it’s my favorite season to dress for! The colors are brighter, the styles are lighter, and there’s a laid-back vibe. Summer clothing is all about transitional pieces. A sundress with sandals or flats is perfect for a day of shopping with friends, and then can transform into a night look with some wedges and a bolder lipstick.
Let’s talk trends for this summer. Just as we all suspected, the off the shoulder trend isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. I thought I would be tired of this by now, because of how popular it was last year, but I can’t get enough! Most OTS options are super flattering, which is always a plus in my book.
One thing that’s great about summer fashion is that you can get as crazy as you want. Want to wear polka dots and stripes? It can be done! Want to wear white after Labor Day? (You rebel) Go for it! The new rule is that there are no rules anymore. Go crazy with print, go nuts with color. This summer is the time to do it.
Another trend I’m thrilled to report is the tassel trend. Lately, tassels are everywhere you look. Tassels, as well as pom poms, are being spotted on straw clutches, summer sandals, beach totes, and on the linings of sundresses and cover-ups. They make any outfit more fun, especially in the summer months. You may find yourself with a tassel obsession—it can happen easier than you think!
My tassel obsession brings me to the next trend I wanted to tell you guys about. One of the easiest ways to transform any outfit is with the addition of statement earrings. There are so many choices out there; it can be hard to make a decision! Earrings made with tassels, fringe, and beads are the most popular. I especially recommend statement earrings to those that aren’t wild about wearing prints, and those that don’t want to step too far out of their comfort zone. The great thing about statement earrings is that one pair may go with several different looks you already have in your closet. Use them to dress up that sundress for a night on the town, or pair them with some shorts and sandals for a casual lunch date. Statement earrings aren’t just for fancy events anymore, they’re for every day!
I hope you guys have enjoyed my intro into fashion as much as I’ve enjoyed writing it. For more fashion tips, trends, and looks check out my blog at highheelsandhappyhartz.com!
