5 Family Days to Make the Most of the Season
Cooler days, colorful leaves and weekends that practically beg you to get out of the house—fall might be one of the best times to be a family in Owensboro. You don’t need a packed calendar or a big trip to make the season memorable. We’ve planned five easy family days in and around Owensboro, each with a different theme. Pick one for your next free Saturday, combine a few ideas or see if your family can check off all five before winter arrives.
Day 1
PLAY TOURIST
When was the last time your family explored Owensboro like visitors? Start downtown with a stop at Visit Owensboro to grab some Owensboro merch, then spend the morning exploring the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum and Owensboro Museum of Science & History. Walk along the riverfront, let the kids play at Smothers Park and snap a family photo in front of the Kentucky Mirror Mosaic or one of downtown’s murals.
For lunch, go all-in on an Owensboro classic with barbecue from Moonlite or Old Hickory. Save room for something sweet—a milkshake from Wonder Whip or The Big Dipper is a pretty great way to finish your hometown tour.
MAKE IT FUN: Dress like actual tourists for the day—fanny packs encouraged. Have your littles draw a map of Owensboro before you leave and let their version guide your adventure. And instead of documenting everything on your phones, unplug and bring along a digital or disposable camera. You’ll end the day with photos that feel a little more like vacation memories.
Day 2
HAVE A LOCAL FOOD DAY
Breakfast. Lunch. Treat. Dinner. Four stops. One delicious fall Saturday.
Start with donuts, pastries or breakfast from a local spot. Try somewhere different for lunch, then make an afternoon sweet-treat run mandatory. Finish the day around a table at one of your family’s longtime favorites.
Let everyone choose one stop, draw restaurant names from a bowl or make a rule that every place has to be somewhere you’ve never tried.
TRY THIS: Let each family member order something for everyone to share. You may discover a new favorite—or quickly remember why you usually let everyone order for themselves.
Day 3
CHASE THE FALL COLORS
Pick a crisp fall day, pack a picnic and head to Yellow Creek Park or Panther Creek Park.
Walk the trails, play on the playground and see how many signs of the season the kids can find. Bring home a few colorful leaves for leaf rubbings, pressed-leaf bookmarks or an easy fall collage.
Don’t call it a day when the sun goes down. Order pizza, light the firepit, roast marshmallows and bring out the blankets for a night outside.
FALL SCAVENGER HUNT: Find a red leaf, yellow leaf, acorn, pinecone, something shaped like a heart and the biggest leaf you can find.
Day 4
LET THE KIDS PLAN IT
Parents, you get exactly one decision: the budget. Decide how much your family can spend for the day, write that number down and then hand over the itinerary to the kids. They get to decide how to spend it.
Maybe they choose bowling or skating for the activity. Maybe lunch is pizza, followed by an ice cream run and a trip to the park because they spent most of their budget on food. Part of the fun is watching them decide what’s worth the splurge, where they can save and how to make their dollars stretch.
For younger kids, divide up the choices so everyone gets a turn. Older kids can work together to plan the whole day.
KIDS, YOU’RE IN CHARGE!
THE RULE: Stay within budget. Everything else is up to you!
Day 5
TAKE THE SCENIC ROUTE
Sometimes you just need to get in the car and go. Choose a destination within about an hour of Owensboro and make the drive part of the adventure. Explore Henderson, stroll the riverfront in Newburgh, spend the day surrounded by fall color at Lincoln State Park, or stay closer to home with a trip into the county.
Skip the interstate when you can, turn up a family playlist and leave enough room in the schedule to stop when something catches your attention.
ROAD TRIP RULE: Everyone gets one song request, one snack pick and one vote for an unplanned stop.
